Congress President Kharge Rebukes PM Modi’s Critique of ‘Vintage Congress Culture’

In a robust and pointed rebuttal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent criticism regarding the ‘vintage Congress culture,’ Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on Thursday, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the PM of ‘manipulating Democracy.’ Kharge’s response came after more than 600 lawyers addressed a letter to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, expressing apprehensions about a ‘specific interest group’ attempting to influence the judiciary and tarnish the image of courts.

PM Modi’s critique, labeling the Congress as adherents of a ‘vintage Congress culture’ that resorts to browbeating and bullying while seeking commitments solely for selfish interests, drew a sharp response from Kharge. In his social media post, Kharge called out PM Modi’s selective memory, pointing to past instances where senior Supreme Court judges felt compelled to hold an unprecedented press conference to warn against the perceived ‘destruction of Democracy.’

Kharge did not mince words, questioning PM Modi’s party’s decision to field a former High Court judge in West Bengal for the current Lok Sabha elections. He challenged PM Modi to stop shifting blame onto the Congress for what he deemed ‘own sins.’ Kharge also accused PM Modi of ‘mastering the art of manipulating Democracy and hurting the Constitution,’ echoing concerns raised by the legal fraternity about undue pressure on the judiciary.

The letter sent by the 600 lawyers to CJI Chandrachud highlighted their worries about a ‘specific interest group’ employing pressure tactics to influence judicial outcomes, particularly in cases involving political figures and corruption allegations. They alleged instances of ‘bench fixing’ and likened domestic courts to those in lawless regimes, painting a troubling picture of attempts to undermine judicial independence.

PM Modi’s remarks and the subsequent response from Congress President Kharge underscore the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition regarding the functioning of democratic institutions and the rule of law. As political discourse intensifies ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, these exchanges reflect deeper concerns about the state of governance and the integrity of India’s democratic institutions.
